What makes me a Great Game Designer
From clear, carefully curated design documents, to pitching ideas to everybody in the team, Communication is a key skill. As a designer, I know how to act as the north star for the team, ensuring that I communicate my concepts carefully in order to get buy-in from all stakeholders.
When both playing and making games, it’s important to know how to play in a team. A great designer has a clear, unifying vision and he knows how to champion it to all of the parts of the team, which are often very different audiences.
It’s not always about adding new things. Sometimes, a designer knows how to assess the state of the game, and knows when to step in and fix problems before they cost a lot of time and money to repair.
Oftentimes, a designer’s job is to juggle multiple parallel features, jumping between fixing bugs for one feature, pitching ideas for another, and creating a prototype for yet another. I am proud to say that I have always come out on top of challenges like the one described above thanks to my organizational skills.
Especially when it comes to switching to proprietary engines like Snowdrop, but also when working on a game that was build by and entirely different team, being adaptable means quickly understanding how each feature works and building a mental map of the logical structures within a game without much help.
